In Ketchikan, we boarded two floatplanes and for two hours experienced Misty Fjords National Monument up close by soaring over this magnificent pristine wilderness of glaciers, waterfalls, lakes and sheer granite cliffs that rise thousands of feet above narrow waterways carved during the ice ages, centuries ago. One of the highlights was landing in the heart of the wilderness for a stopover on the water.
Our ship from the air
Dad was co-pilot on the plane with five people.
Ten of us on the other plane
We saw miles and miles of pristine wilderness!!
The two planes--we had fun waving to each other!!
Pictures from our landing on the water in the middle of Misty Fjords!
After our flight, our tour bus dropped us off at the famous Creek Street (a row of wooden buildings perched over the water on pilings that was once the home of bars and bordellos and today the bordellos have been converted into shops) where from the boardwalk we watched the salmon run upstream in the creek in addition to browsing through the shops.
Turbo-charged growing season produces such gorgeous flowers!
The stream was just full of salmon going upstream!
The land of totem poles

We also watched The Great Alaskan Lumberjack Show, which celebrated Ketchikan’s logging heyday. We cheered entertaining pros as they competed at logrolling, axe throwing and pole climbing.
The show was really fun and entertaining!
A bronze monument celebrating all of the people that made up the early days of Alaska with our ship in the background!
